Branding

Rebrand or refresh? A Utah founder's guide

By Storey · A Utah product studio

Your brand feels "off," but you're not sure if it needs a tune-up or a teardown. Spending on the wrong one is expensive. Here's how to tell.

Signs you need a refresh

A refresh keeps your core identity and modernizes the execution. You probably need one if:

A refresh is faster and cheaper, and it protects the recognition you've already built.

Signs you need a rebrand

A rebrand rebuilds the identity from the strategy up. You likely need one if:

A Utah before-and-after

MomTribe came to us with a casual, maroon "mom♥tribe" identity — friendly, but it read like a local Facebook meetup. Their vision was a statewide, then national, community with real sponsors. The old look couldn't carry that.

We rebuilt it: a warm, editorial system — cream, coral and sage, a refined mark, and a voice that scales. Three weeks later they had a brand that could headline an app and court partners. Then we built the app on top of it. That's the tell: when the strategy has outgrown the look, it's a rebrand — not a refresh.

The one-team advantage

If you're going to rebrand and build a product, doing them with the same team means the brand you approve is exactly what ships in the app — no translation lost between a branding agency and a separate dev shop.
